“Save energy, protect the environment, strengthen health” are the stated objectives of the Energy Health Environment (EHE) Club, which aims to encourage its members and the community to ride bicycles and use public transport.The Club, which was established and showcased at the FPT bicycle race, has so far attracted about 30 members who come from many volunteer environment clubs in Hanoi.
EHE Club has collaborated with these clubs to organize a lot of useful activities such as riding bicycles to visit the Dau and Phat Tich Pagodas, weekly rides and clearing public hygiene, joining in students’ activities, etc. It seems that even more FPT Software staff are interested in the club’s activities and want to enroll.

FPT UNIVERSITY CELEBRATES 2ND ANNIVERSARY
On January 13th, the 2nd anniversary of FPT University (FU) was celebrated at Tu Liem Stadium in Hanoi. Organized along the lines of an Olympic Games, this year’s ceremony highlighted team spirit and teacher - student cooperation. After two years of continuous development, FU has enrolled 2,000 students in its two training locations in Hanoi and HCM City, and will soon found its third in Danang. The first class of 62 students to have graduated from the university has recently joined an “On the job training” program, in which they will train in FPT Software for one year.
FPT SOFTWARE 2008'S PERFORMANCE RESULTS & 2009'S BUSINESS PLAN
In 2008, FPT Software earned USD 42 million in revenue, which represented roughly 90% of the target figure and a growth of 42% from the previous year. Furthermore, 90% of the target profit was achieved. Staff count at the end of 2008 was 2,700, an increase of 15% from 2007. The fact that the impact of the economic crisis could not yet be gauged with accuracy and appropriate changes to plans could not be made in a timely fashion had affect the performance. FPT Software was nonetheless able to emerge rather unscathed from the crisis.By the end of 2008, FPT Software's number of customers had increased to a figure 2.5 times as large as that of 2007. The Japanese market continued to prove its potential and affirmed its position as the leading revenue earner. In addition, FPT Software has kept on expanding into the European, Asia Pacific, and American markets by opening up new branches in Europe, Malaysia, Australia, and the United States. Even in its initial stages, the company has experienced success in these markets.The year 2009 is forecasted to be much more difficult. Hence FPT Software will focus on achieving effective operation through quality management, project management innovation, cost control, as well as intensive improvement of individuals’ skills and mindset. By bearing hardships with customers, FPT Software will become a leading choice for them in difficult times.

Intel is also heavily reliant on Vietnam to meet its outsourcing needs. In October of 2006, Intel Capital, the unit involved in venture capital for the Intel Corporation, announced a $3.5 million investment in FPT, Vietnam’s largest software company, located in Hanoi. Earlier in that same year, the company said that it was going to build a factory for chip assembly and testing with a price tag of $300 million (San Jose Mercury News, “Intel Invests in Vietnam Software Company, October 24, 2006).
Other companies that have chosen to outsource to Vietnam include Nortel Networks, Bayer, Sony, Cisco, and Anheuser Bush (source: CIO.com, “Outsourcing to Vietnam”).

Microsoft Corp. Chairman Bill Gates said Vietnam has the potential to develop as an outsourcing center similar to India, during the first visit by the world's richest man to the Southeast Asian nation.
Gates met Vietnamese Prime Minister Phan Van Khai and President Tran Duc Luong in Hanoi, before crossing town to take questions from students at the Hanoi University of Technology. The visit by the head of the world's biggest software company takes place two months after Intel Corp., the world's biggest semiconductor maker, said it would build a plant in Vietnam.
While the U.S. government says infringement of intellectual property rights is rampant in Vietnam, the nation of 84 million people is attracting the attention of global technology companies, lured by economic growth exceeding 8 percent and an estimated literacy rate of at least 90 percent.
"It's great that Intel is coming here, and no doubt that other information-technology manufacturers will see the kinds of skills and labor here and come into the market," Gates said in Hanoi Saturday. "But in no sense should Vietnam specialize in manufacturing. Vietnam should also focus on software development, outsourcing. There's an opportunity to do call centers."
Citing the example of India, Gates said "hopefully Vietnam can also be a country that grows the capacity to supply skills to other countries, including the U.S."
On Saturday, with Gates looking on, Microsoft signed an accord with Vietnam's Ministry of Finance in which the ministry would become the first state body to use fully licensed software throughout its entire information technology system, according to a Finance Ministry press release.

Fsoft’s 10th anniversary
Many difficulties FPT had to face at the first period of hardship. FPT’s start-up capital in 1998 was about US$ 1M. FPT made a decision of spending US$ 1M for going abroad.
However, the first problem is that where is money?
Fortunately, BIDV Bank was willing to help. I met with Mr. Le Dao Nguyen, BIDV’s Deputy General Director, to discuss the way of doing the business. US$ 1M was too easy to lend. The only difficulty was that FPT has no pledge, as well as no guarantor.
The dialogue between I and Mr. Nguyen was as the following:
Le Dao Nguyen (LDN): Why is US$ 1M?
Le Quang Tien (LQT): Because we have 100 programmers, 5k for each programmer a year, 1M is needed for 2 years.
LDN: Capacity of success?
LQT: 50/50
LDN: Anything for mortgage?
LQT: 100 programmers + Mr. Binh and me. If we have no ability to pay our debt, we will work for BIDV for 3 years.
LDN: What can programmers do for a bank?
LQT: Anything. Cashiers, recovering debts, maintaining computers, arts performance, etc.

LQT: How about our houses in Thu Le for mortgage?
LDN: OK.
Finally, BIDV granted credit terms of US$ 1M to us for doing software outsourcing.

The open library page HSK Wiki will make a debut on Jan 6 at the FPT Software Intranet. Built by Operation Group No. 8 and QA Department, HSK Wiki is an affirmation of FPT Software’s engagement to perform the Technical Transfer program for members working in HitachiSoft projects.

FPT LEADERSHIP INSTITUTE SET UP
FPT Leadership Institute (FLI) will officially begin operations on January 13, 2009 putting an end to the pilot model of the institute which has lasted for 2 years. Mr. Truong Gia Binh has been appointed the institute’s director. FLI will have the function of building and developing FPT’s leading staff at all levels in compliance with FPT’s strategy and will become the most important strategic unit of FPT.
FPT SOFTWARE PROMOTES COLLABORATION WITH DATALAB USA
Trusting in FPT Software after the success of the pilot project signed in April 2008, DataLab USA has continuously promoted relations between the two companies by signing outsourcing services agreements with FPT Software recently.The cooperation agreements are a Master Service Agreement of software outsourcing which aims to provide human resources for DataLab USA to develop its projects with customers, and a Memorandum of Understanding for kicking off a project. Then, FPT Software will set up an Offshore Development Center for DataLab USA and undertake the upcoming projects. In addition, the two sides agreed to establish a business team to jointly explore business opportunities with both existing and potential customers.

FPT Software’s Board of Directors announces the election of Mr. Nguyen Thanh Nam as FPT Software Chairman and the appointment of Ms. Bui Thi Hong Lien as Chief Executive Officer. Mr. Nguyen Thanh Nam assumed his new position on December 1, 2008. And the appointment of Ms. Bui Thi Hong Lien became effective on January 1, 2009.Mr. Nguyen Thanh Nam was CEO since the founding of the Company. Having played a key role in FPT Corporation since its early days, he has extensive experience in the software industry. Under his management, FPT Software turned from a company with 17 staff members to a multinational organization with 2700 employees and an average growth rate of 70% for the years 2002-2007.Ms. Bui Thi Hong Lien was Director of FPT Japan before being appointed FPT Software CEO. She too, has been with FPT Software since its inception and has occupied various important positions such as FPT India CEO and FPT Software Vice President.
